The Dead Pit

Director: Brett Leonard

Drop in anytime

A young woman has lost her entire memory and has been admitted into a mental hospital where she is being taken cared of by Dr. Gerald Swan. Not long after her arrival an earthquake erupts and reanimates something evil that lies very close to the hospital.

I remember doing a blind buy of this film back in the 90’s and I was quite surprised and happy with the purchase since it was a very enjoyable horror film that I had never heard anything about before it became a part of my growing VHS collection. However, revisiting it now nearly twenty years later, I can still say that it has something very good going about it, but it also a very flawed film.

The Living Dead Girl

livingdeadgirlGenre: Horror
Year: 1982
Country: France

original title: La Morte Vivante
aka: Lady Dracula, Scare – Dead or Alive?, Zombie Queen

Director: Jean Rollin
Starring: Marina Pierro, Francoise Bianchard, Mike Marshall, Carina Barone, Fanny Magier

Toxic waste is accidentally spilled on the grown where the deceased body of Catherine Valmont is resting and the toxic is making Catherine come back to life. Although she is now alive again, something has changed about her and she herself is not sure what she has become.

Her instincts tell her to seek out her childhood friend Helene to get help. It also becomes clear to her that in order to stay alive, she has to drink the blood of other humans. Helene can’t deny her beloved friend help, so together they become a danger to anyone living nearby them, although the horrific acts is bound to also put them in danger.

Although mostly known for doing erotic vampire films, cult director also dabbled within the zombie subgenre of horror and The Living Dead Girl is one of these films. It is not your typical zombie film however since this deal with the tragic and doomed friendship and love between Helene and Catherine. What would anyone do if their best friend did return from the other side? Would anyone really turn their back against them or would they rather try to do whatever they can for them, even if it would involve supplying other humans as food to them?

Shaun of the Dead

shaunofthedeadGenre: Horror / Comedy
Year: 2004
Country: England

Director: Edgar Wright
Starring: Simon Pegg, Kate Ashfield, Nick Frost, Lucy Davis, Dylan Moran

It’s just one of those days when you’re feeling a little… dead

The zombie apocalypse is happening in London, not that Shaun notice this right away. Shaun is a regular chap who is happy with life when he’s at home playing video games or drinking beer with his dumb and obnoxious friend Ed. Right before the zombies emerged, his girlfriend Liz broke up with him due to him never growing up and taking responsibility for his life.

After him and Ed have realized what is going on in the world, they head over to save his mum, stepdad and Liz and head over to the local pub called The Winchester until everything blows over. However, things do not go as smooth as they have planned.

Shaun of the Dead is a very clever and witty comedy by Edgar Wright (Hot Fuzz, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World) who shows that he respect, love and understand the zombie genre. Instead of being a spoof where you are supposed to laugh at the material it is referring to, this one feels more like an homage where it gives tribute to the great zombie movies of the past. And also makes fun of the quick edited, flashy newer ones. It is simply filled with so many small references that most people won’t be able to spot on the first watch.

Night of the Living Dead

notld90Genre: Horror
Year: 1990
Country: USA

Director: Tom Savini
Starring: Tony Todd, Patricia Tallman, Tom Towles, McKee Anderson, William Butler

There IS a fate worse than death.

Barbara and her brother Johnny is visiting their mother’s grave. Johnny starts to make fun of his sister while they are there, but suddenly zombies starts to appear and attack them. Johnny gets killed during the struggle, while Barbara is able to flee away.

She arrives at a farmhouse where she first come across a zombie inside and quickly leaves, only to be consoled by a guy named Ben who arrived just as she was running out of the house and they decide that it’s still safer to go inside this house than stay outside of it. They find more people, living this time, in the basement and they use the house as a safety zone while more and more zombies are gathering outside of it.

This is a remake of one of the highest regarded horror movies of old time – the George Romero classic with the same title from 1968. Some say the birth of the remake came simply because the filmmakers never got the copyright for the original and this was a decent way to make some well deserved money off the title. This time the original director George Romero was happy to produce and write the script, while the makeup wizard Tom Savini got his chance to direct his first full length movie.

Zombie Ass: Toilet of the Dead

zombieassGenre: Horror / Comedy
Year: 2011
Country: Japan

original title: Zonbi Asu

Director: Noboru Iguchi
Starring: Arisa Nakamura, Mayu Sugano, Asana Mamoru, Yüki, Danny

We are going to flush you!

A group of teenagers travel out to the country to have some fun and do some fishing. Their trip quickly takes a shitty turn when they get attacked by some poop covered zombies that have been taken over by some crazy parasite.

How can you say no to a title like Zombie Ass: Toilet of the Dead? Even if it plays like a typical new corny splatter comedy that have been flooding out from the crazy Japanese the last years, it is still a film that I have been anticipating for quite some while now after witnessing one of the greatest trailers of the last ten years.

Of course a film like this isn’t made to be taken seriously. It is done to deliver gross toilet humour and its success level is based on how long they can keep the jokes entertaining and fresh. So, is it actually any fun? Yeah, it starts out like the greatest shit zombie movie ever made and it is able to keep the crap smelling fresh for quite some time, but it did loose some steam when the third act enters were it became more of a monster than zombie film.

They find their mother in very bad shape in their abandoned house and the military shows up right away to pick them up and bring them back to the safe zone. Their mother is tested and she seems to be immune to the rage virus, although she is still carrying it. Don checks up on her one night and gives her a kiss, which transfers the virus over to him and now London is not safe anymore.

[Rec] III: Genesis

rec3Genre: Horror
Year: 2012
Country: Spain

Director: Paco Plaza
Starring: Leticia Dolera, Javier Botet, Diego Martin, Alex Monner, Carla Nieto

You may now kiss the bride.

Today is a happy day for Clara and Koldo who are getting married in front of all their family and friends in a lovely church. They have hired a two guys to document their wedding and everything is going perfectly until Clara’s drunk uncle starts to throw up blood outside of the wedding reception.

A few minutes later there’s full chaos when he attacks the guests and everything who gets bitten turns into bloodthirsty demonic creatures. In the middle of all this chaos, Koldo and Clara gets separated and they have to fight off these zombie creatures each on their own to find each other and get out alive.

[Rec] 3 switches things up from the previous entries since it abandons the handheld camera point of view after the bloodbath has started, even making a little joke about it at the same time when one of the characters asks what the hell the cameraman is still filming for. It also doesn’t have much to do with the previous ones when it comes to the plot either, except that this place is also haunted by gut eating zombies. I guess it’s easier to secure success by using the same name and I guess since it uses the same type of zombies that excuse can be made that this does take place in the same “universe” as the two other films.
