Stake Land

stakelandGenre: Horror / Action
Year: 2010
Country: USA

Director: Jim Mickle
Starring: Connor Paolo, Gregory Jones, Traci Hovel, Nick Damici, James Godwin

The most dangerous thing is to be alive

In the near future, bloodthirsty vampires has taken over and ruined society as we know it. A young teenager named Martin is saved by a cowboy looking fella that goes under the name “Mister” and is taken under his care and protection.

They decide to head up north to find a safe place called New Eden in Canada, but on their journey they will not only come across vicious vampires, but also a fanatic religious cult of men that are perhaps even more dangerous than the undead.

Stake Land has an interesting concept. It tries to do the post-apocalyptic thing where they switch out the zombies and rather let vampires be the evil monsters. Vampires are rarely used in this way for some reason and that does make this movie feel very fresh and original.

I Vampiri

ivampiriGenre: Horror
Year: 1956
Country: Italy

aka: Evil’s Commandment, Lust of the Vampire, Lady Vampire, The Devil’s Commandment, The Vampires

Director: Riccardo Freda
Starring: Gianna Maria Canale, Carlo D’Angelo, Dario Michaelis, Wandisa Guida, Angelo Galassi

Beautiful Parisian girls were his victims!

A woman is fished out of the river Seine in Paris. Her body is totally drained of all blood and this is not the first time this has happened lately in the usually quiet town. Pierre Lantin is a local reporter who is trying to figure this case out, to much dismay of inspector Chantal who believe the media is only hurting their own investigation by causing terror in the city by even nicknaming the killer “The Vampire”. Who will find “The Vampire” first and how many more innocent lives will be lost before they find who is responsible for terrorizing the city?

I Vampiri is known as the first modern horror movie from Italy. It’s also the movie where Mario Bava gets to do some directing after Riccardo Freda left the set two days before the movie was finished. There’s been a lot of talk amongst Bavafans on what scenes he did and what Freda did. Some of the scenes here are very gothic and beautiful shot, but I’d like to give both the credit since it is a team effort with Bava originally as “only” the cinematographer.

Vampire Hunters

vampirehuntersGenre: Action / Horror
Year: 2003
Country: Hong Kong

aka: The Era of Vampires

Director: Wellson Chin
Starring: Ken Chang, Michael Chow Man-Kin, Suet Lam, Kwok-Kwan Chan, Anya

Five heroes. A coven of vampires. A lot bad blood.

The profession of being a vampire hunter was a valid one in the 17th Century in China. They even had vampire hunting schools at that time. Wind, Thunder, Rain and Lightning are four promising young students who are chosen to accompany a master of the craft on a journey to kill a powerful vampire. Things doesn’t go very well and their master gets lost and the foursome use the next months to track down what might have happened to him.

Vampires in China differ from the american and european ones. Here they usually hop around, spit poison, cannot see you if you are wet and generally don’t like water and they can also draw blood without biting your neck. They are not romantic, beautiful beasts but rather undead zombielike creatures.

dracula3dGenre: Horror
Year: 2012
Country: Italy

aka: Dracula 3D

Director: Dario Argento
Starring: Asia Argento, Rutger Hauer, Thomas Kretschmann, Marta Gastini, Unax Ugalde

Jonathan Harker is a young British librarian who is traveling to Transylvania to visit the castle of Count Dracula. Harker soon finds himself being imprisoned by the Count and his lovely maid Tania.

Harker’s wife Mina travels after Harker to find out what has happened to her husband. She arrives at the village and stays with her dear friend Lucy before she heads out to the castle of Count Dracula to find her husband, dead or alive.

Is there really any need for a new adaptation of the legendary Bram Stoker book in 2013? I don’t think so and I’m not very interested in seeing new films that follow the book and premise closely, but this one is done by Dario Argento. Argento is one of my favorite directors of all time and I’m one of the few who still enjoy his output these days, which include stuff like The Card Player, Mother of Tears and Giallo. All films that a big portion of his earlier fans does not care much about.

Nosferatu the Vampyre

Year: 1979
Country: Germany

original title: Nosferatu: Phantom der Nacht

Director: Werner Herzog
Starring: Klaus Kinski, Isabelle Adjani, Bruno Ganz, Roland Topor, Walter Ladengast

Jonathan Harker is a real estate agent traveling to visit the recluse Count Dracula at his castle in Transylvania. When he gets close to the castle, he gets warned by locals that the count is a bloodsucking vampire. He ignores the warnings and meets the strange character at his castle where he spends the upcoming nights.

The property that the count is after is in Wismar, Germany where Harker is from. The count also sees a portrait of Harker’s wife Lucy and gets mesmerized by her looks. He decides to buy the property and travel to Wismar, leaving Harker imprisoned at the castle. Harker has to escape and get home before Dracula gets to his young and lovely wife.

Nosferatu The Vampyre is a stylish remake/homage to the legendary 1922 movie. It is handled very respectful by director Werner Herzog and it oozes of style and atmosphere. It stays true to the original movie and the small things that are changed or added work very well. He also had to shoot the movie in both german and english at the same time. The general consensus seems to be that the german language one is better and that’s also the one I watched.
