Oz: The Complete Series

ozGenre: Drama / Crime
Year: 1997-2003
Country: USA

Directors: Various
Starring: Ernie Hudson, J.K. Simmons, Lee Tergesen, Dean Winters, George Morfogen

It’s no place like home

Welcome to the Oswald State Correctional Facility, also known by the nickname “Oz”, where we are invited to get an inside look at life behind bars. Oz is a maximum security prison located in New York with an own level called “Emerald City” where the inmates have more freedom in order to learn responsibility and being able to socialize peacefully with others.

That’s of course how it is meant to be in Emerald City. The reality is that there is a constant power struggle between the different cliques that are broken into the Homeboys, the Wiseguys, the Muslims, the Aryan Brotherhood, the Bikers, the Gays, the Irish and the Latinos. And you can also add the correctional officers as another gang as they are not exactly law abiding citizens themselves.

Oz is a television show that ran on HBO from 1997 to 2003 that was hyped up as being “edgy”, which it was and I guess still is. There’s way more male nudity and homosexual scenes in this show than in anything else I have ever seen. Although violence is acceptable in TV today, back in the late 90’s it wasn’t so common to see rough violence on the small screen, so Oz should probably get some “props” for paving the way for more violence and nudity on TV.

Rose Red

roseredGenre: Horror
Year: 2002
Country: USA

Director: Craig R. Baxley
Starring: Nancy Travis, Matt Keeslar, Kimberly J. Brown, David Dukes, Judith Ivey

From the imagination of Stephen King comes a disturbing new tale

Dr. Joyce Reardon is a determined psychology professor, who is interested in a mansion called Rose Red. She is gathering a team of psychics to spend time at the mansion to attempt to gather scientific proof of paranormal phenomena.

The crew of expert psychics get a surprise when they arrive at the mansion. Dr. Reardon has also invited a young autistic girl named Annie to join them. Annie has very strong powers and will be important both for the study, but also for everyone to get out of the place alive.

Mini-series based on stories from Stephen King are usually well worth watching. They have the time to show off all the great characters that make his stories work so well. Rose Red however is not a TV show based on one of his books, but rather a show that he wrote the screenplay for. Originally it was pitched to Steven Spielberg in the late 90’s to be made into a feature film, but the project never got off the ground.

Starring: Jonathan Brandis, Brandon Cane, Adam Faraizi, Tim Curry, Emily Perkins

Your every fear – all in one deadly enemy

It has been 30 years since a group of outcast children became friends and created their own little club called The Losers Club after being stalked and tormented by both a group of bullies, led by Henry Bowers and also a strange killer clown that calls himself Pennywise.

This clown is able to play on the fear of each child and the only way they could fight it was to stand together and face him as a group. After they have defeated him, they all grow up and go their separate way, but when Pennywise again becomes active in their hometown Derry, Maine, the only remaining member of The Losers Club that didn’t move away calls upon the rest of the group to face this demonic creature once again.

It is generally perceived that Stephen King stories work best in the mini-series format. It usually takes more than 90 minutes to build up the characters to match what he does on pen and paper and the end result has usually become better when his stories are fleshed out more on the screen with a longer running time than what a movie can offer.

Holliston – Season One

hollistonGenre: Comedy
Year: 2012
Country: USA

Director: Adam Green
Starring: Adam Green, Joe Lynch, Laura Ortiz, Corri English, Dee Snider

Funny when someone loses their head

Adam Green and Joe Lynch are two young aspiring horror filmmakers who are both stuck in their hometown Holliston, MA. They live together in a small apartment and get by day-to-day by working for a local cable access station where they also have their own horror movie show called The Movie Crypt.

While Joe has a steady relationship with Laura, Adam has never gotten over his first love Corri. To his surprise and excitement, Corri has decided to move back to Holliston and Adam assumes that this means they will patch things up and once again become romantically involved with each other. However, she moving back is not the only surprise in store for Adam, cause when she does arrive back in Holliston she also brings a boyfriend with her.

Try to take this in for a second. Holliston is a sitcom (with a laugh track) about two horror filmmakers with plenty of horror movie related jokes and has Dee Snider and Oderus Urungus in its supporting cast. It sounds like a ridiculous idea, but FEARnet believed in the concept and let Adam Green create a first season of the show to test it out.
