Return to Nuke ‘Em High: Volume 1

returntonukeemGenre: Comedy / Horror
Year: 2013
Country: USA

Director: Lloyd Kaufman
Starring: Asta Paredes, Catherine Corcoran, Vito Trigo, Clay von Carlowitz, Zac Amico

Readin’… writin’… radiation… again!

Tromaville High School. The filthiest school in the world and most likely the only school that has had its students turn into mutated freaks because of the smart placement of a nuclear plant right next to it.

Although the radiation from the nuclear plant is long gone, a new evil corporation named Tromorganic Foodstuffs Conglomerate strikes a deal with the school to serve delicious green taco’s. This turns several of the students into new mutated Cretins and once again the school becomes a violent freak show.

20 years after the last Nuke ‘Em High film, Troma finally brought it back to life again with this new story that was splitĀ into two films with the second volume being released later this year. Supposedly the idea of splitting the film into two parts came by advise from Quentin Tarantino, but this isn’t the first time Lloyd Kaufman has done this. It was done with both the two first sequels of Toxic Avenger and also the two sequels of Class of Nuke ‘Em High.

All I Need To Know About Filmmaking I Learned From The Toxic Avenger

allineedAuthor: Lloyd Kaufman, James Gunn
Media: Book
Year: 1998

From the back of the book:

This is the true story of the moviemaking maverick who co-founded an independent studio twenty-five years ago in a humble broom closet… who used raw hamburgers, Karo syrup blood, and Bromo-Seltzer vomit to create films of questionable artistic and moral value… who battled the MPAA rating board to bring his outrageous vision to the screen… who rejected Madonna after an audition… who defied the Hollywood system and slapped the face of the industry… and who built a B-movie empire filled with Chopper Chicks, Surf Nazis, Kabuki Cops, Nymphoid Barbarians, and a lone hero known as The Toxic Avenger.

This is the story of Troma Studios. A story of guerilla filmmaking at its cheapest, of the American Dream torn limb from limd, and of topless starlets menaced by obscene rubber puppets.”

This book lets us get an insight into the (dirty) mind and also the personal life of Lloyd Kaufman. The premise of the book was that it was supposed to give tips to aspiring independent filmmakers, but as is common with Kaufman, he prefers to do things more entertaining and the book ends up being filled with a lot of funny stuff mixed with his and Troma’s story. The humour works great in the book and it is very enjoyable book to read.

Father’s Day

POSTER - FATHER'S DAYGenre: Horror / Comedy
Year: 2011
Country: USA

Director: Adam Brooks, Jeremy Gillespie, Matt Kennedy, Steven Kostanski, Conor Sweeney
Starring: Adam Brooks, Matthew Kennedy, Conor Sweeney, Amy Groening, Garrett Hnatiuk

Sons, lock up your fathers… vengeance arrives on… Father’s Day!

Ahab has dedicated his life to avenge his father’s death. He knows that the killer is still out there, raping and murdering random adult men who have children. He has been able to identify the killer and is now closer than ever to get his hands on the sick, sadistic murderer Chris Fuchman.

Father’s Day can be categorized together with the so-called “neo” Grindhouse films that have been emerging after Quentin Tarantino’s Grindhouse film that came out a few years ago. I wasn’t a fan of Grindhouse and haven’t cared that much about any of the films that came after either, although I haven’t seen them all and I probably won’t anytime soon.

The only thing I knew about this before watching it was that one of my Internet friends loved it, another one hated it and that it is distributed by Troma. Troma hasn’t distributed any films that I have found interesting for a lot of years now and I tend to only like the ones that they make themselves.

Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead

POSTER - POULTRYGEISTGenre: Comedy / Horror
Year: 2006
Country: USA

Director: Lloyd Kaufman
Starring: Jason Yachanin, Kate Graham, Allyson Sereboff, Robin Watkins, Joshua Olatunde

Humans… the other white meat… Unless you’re black, then it’s dark meat… Or if you are asian, then it’s yellow meat… Or if you are Native American, it’s red meat…

Arbie and Wendy are two young teens who have fallen in love with each other. When Wendy heads off to college their relationship turns cold and they lose contact. A couple of years later, Arbie walks past a protest rally that are against the opening of a new fast food restaurant that have been built on an ancient Indian burial ground.

Among the protesters, Arbie catches Wendy. Wendy has now become a lesbian and that causes Arbie to annoy Wendy by taking a job at the new fast food restaurant. It doesn’t take long before the spirits of the Indians team up with the hundreds of dead chickens to form possessed chicken zombies (or is it zombie chickens?) who wants to destroy this establishment and everyone involved with it.

Poultrygeist is a satiric take on the American fast food industry. It’s filled with gore, slime, boobs, action, comedy and even musical scenes! That might sound like most Troma films, but this is one of their good efforts!

Coons! Night of the Bandits of the Night

coonsGenre: Comedy / Horror
Year: 2005
Country: USA

Director: Travis Irvine
Starring: Lehr Beidelschies, Brian Kamerer, Nick Maier, Zach Riedmaier, John Sarvas

They come for your food… they stay for your FLESH!

A group of college kids are gathering together for a sweet summer break filled with alcohol and fun out on the Raccoon Creek Campground in the small town of Independence. Their festivites get cut short when a horde of bloodthirsty racoons start to attack the camp.

The job of getting rid of these racoons gets given to the newly appointed Park Ranger Danger, a couple of so-called expert and a long bearded hippie looking dude. The final showdown between the humans and the racoons ends up being quite a fight with gunfire, bombs and kung fu.

Coons! is a lower than low budget effort produced by Overbites Pictures and distributed by the good folk of Troma Entertainment. According to IMDB; the film was created for the small budget of $5,000 dollars, making it one of the cheapest full feature films I believe that I have seen so far.

Tales from the Crapper

POSTER - TALES FROM THE CRAPPERGenre: Horror / Comedy
Year: 2004
Country: USA

Directors: Gabriel Friedman, Chad Ferrin, Dave Paiko, Brian Spitz, Lloyd Kaufman
Starring: Lloyd Kaufman, Julie Strain, Kevin Eastman, Joe Fleishaker, Rob Zazzali

The Crapkeeper emergers from the toilet to present two tales of horror for us all to enjoy. The first one is called “The Case of the Melon Heavy Alien Man Eater” and is about an alien who has crash landed on planet earth and has to fix his spaceship. The alien spends most of his time in strip clubs, enjoying the look of the females and also by murdering innocent people.

A big breasted cop is doing whatever she can to stop this evil alien plans and goes undercover as a stripper to find him and stop him once and for all. After this story ends, we get a ten minute interlude where the Crapkeeper learns the audience on how they too can make no budget films.

The second and last story, “Tuition of the Terror Twat” begins and it is about a group of young students who needs to raise some fast cash so that one of them will be able to pay for college. They decide that it would be a good idea to hold a party filled with strippers, but little do they know that the strippers they have hired are in fact bloodsucking vampires!

LolliLove

lolliloveGenre: Comedy
Year: 2004
Country: USA

Director: Jenna Fischer
Starring: James Gunn, Jenna Fischer, Peter Alton, Sarah Sido, Linda Cardellini

Saving the world, one sucker at a time

Jenna and James is a young Hollywood couple that have done well in their lives so far. Doing charity is a good way for young celebrities to get even more famous and show off what good people they are, so they come up with the idea of LolliLove.

LolliLove is a charity that is supposed to improve the motivations of homeless people to start a new life. Since all of this is documented from the start of the charity to the finish, we get to see how much a simple sweet treat can change the world… at least from the perspective of the giver.

LolliLove is a lower than low budget mockumentary satire that was made for a few thousand dollars. It is quite a ballsy subject to criticise when the couple themselvesĀ live in Hollywood and are a part of the movie industry.

Citizien Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV

POSTER - CITIZEN TOXIE - THE TOXIC AVENGER IVGenre: Comedy / Action
Year: 2000
Country: USA

Director: Lloyd Kaufman
Starring: David Mattey, Clyde Lewis, Heidi Sjursen, Paul Kyrmse, Joe Fleishaker

A tale of two toxies!

The diaper mafia has taken the students and teachers of the Tromaville School for the Very Special hostage and the Toxic Avenger with his sidekick Lardass is on their way to save the day. Before the terror is over, an explosion takes place that puts Toxie in another dimension.

Suddenly he is in Amortville, where things are not so peaceful and calm and the gangsters run the streets. At the same time an evil version of Toxie, The Noxious Offender called Noxie is loose in Tromaville, causing havoc and crime wherever he can. Toxie has to find a way to return to Tromaville and get right of Noxie before the city is destroyed.

The Toxic Avenger is back! Over ten years has passed since the two mediocre sequels and the story in this one ignores what happened in those two films, even going so far as apologizing to the fans for the lack of quality of them in the introduction. When it comes to the story, they didn’t need to do that since the stuff that went on in the second and third film does not get in the way of the story here.
