Children of the Corn

childrenofthecorn2009Genre: Horror
Year: 2009
Country: USA

aka: Stephen King’s Children of the Corn

Director: Donald P. Borchers
Starring: David Anders, Kandyse McClure, Daniel Newman, Preston Bailey, Robert Gerdisch

The unhappy couple of the ex-soldier Burt and ex-prom queen Vicky are nagging on each other driving through Nebraska when suddenly a young boy appears in the middle of the road and they run him over.

The boy dies and the couple drives to the nearby town of Gatlin where they try to find some assistance. Gatlin is however not a normal town and there are no adults to be found. The children of the town has taken over and all the adults have been slaughtered and the couple is now finding themselves in danger of ending up with the same faith as the parents of these children.

The Children of the Corn saga had been dead and buried for nearly ten years when this made for TV (Syfy out of all networks actually) remake popped up. The idea was to make a film that was more based on the original story by Stephen King than what the 1984 movie was but although they might succeed on that point (I don’t believe I ever read King’s short story), everything else in this film is worse than the original film and even worse than all of the sequels aswell.

Children of the Corn: Revelation

childrenofthecorn7Genre: Horror
Year: 2001
Country: USA

aka: Children of the Corn VII: Revelation

Director: Guy Magar
Starring: Claudette Mink, Kyle Cassie, Michael Ironside, Troy Yorke, Michael Rogers

The all-new, terror-filled chapter!

Jamie has been unable to get in touch with her grandmother for quite some time and decide to travel to her home in Omaha, Nebraska to find out what is going on with her. When she arrives, she finds her apartment being condemned with a weird cornfield next to it.

She notices some creepy kids wandering around in the apartment complex and tries to get help from the local police station to locate her grandmother. She is also getting some nightmarish visions of her grandmother and it soon becomes clear to her that there is some evil present that has been infesting the grounds of the apartment complex for years.

Here we go with the seventh entry of Children of the Corn. Who would ever have thought that this simple and little Stephen King story would ever amount to creating this many films, with even two more to add to it after this one. Ever since the fourth one, they have all went in a downward spiral and Revelation will not bring a big smile to the fans of the series either.

Children of the Corn 666: Isaac’s Return

childrenofthecorn6Genre: Horror
Year: 1999
Country: USA

aka: 666: Isaac’s Return, Children of the Corn 666

Director: Kari Skogland
Starring: Natalie Ramsey, Gary Bullock, Alix Koromzay, Stacy Keach, John Franklin

The latest and most horrifying chapter…

Hannah was the first child born out of the original Gatlin cult of children that slaughtered off all the adults in the small city. Hannah is now an adult and is going back to the city of Gatlin to explore her roots and hopefully find her birth mother.

Shortly after arriving in Gatlin, she finds out that the preacher kid that was behind the original massacre, Isaac, never died and has been in a coma ever since the events that took place nearly twenty years ago. Her return awakens Isaac and she finds herself being a part of a potential prophecy that sees He Who Walks Behind The Row rise and gain the power it desperately craves.

This is the sixth entry to the never ending Children of the Corn saga and the selling point this time around is that this marks the return of the actor who portrayed Isaac in the first one, John Franklin. Why that would be cool enough to make fans want to watch this is beyond me and the character aren’t used very well in this film either.

Children of the Corn V: Fields of Terror

childrenofthecorn5Genre: Horror
Year: 1998
Country: USA

Director: Ethan Wiley
Starring: Stacy Galina, Robert Arquette, Eva Mendes, Greg Vaughan, Angela Jones

In a deserted town… The terror continues!

A group of teenagers find themselves stranded in the middle of nowhere with the closest town being Divinity Falls. The town has been taken over by the children of the town, who are all under the power of “He Who Walks Behind The Rows”.

One of the teenagers, Allison finds his brother being a part of these children and she wants to stay at the place to rescue him from the evil that is going on, but the entire group quickly find themselves in great danger and the risk of rescuing her brother might be too much for these young adults.

After the entertaining fourth entry, I remember looking forward to this film back in ’98 (yeah, horror in the 90’s wasn’t all that, what can I say). The Scream craze was infecting all horror films by that time and most horror films had a slasher tone to it with stupid, annoying teenagers (played by twenty something year olds) as the main characters. The characters in this film are all awful and annoying. It’s never a good thing when you want the supposedly good guys to die early on in the film and that’s exactly what happens here.

Children of the Corn: The Gathering

childrenofthecorn4Genre: Horror
Year: 1996
Country: USA

aka: Children of the Corn 4, Deadly Harvest

Director: Greg Spence
Starring: Naomi Watts, Jamie Renee Smith, Karen Black, Mark Salling, Brent Jennings

In a sleepy midwestern town… A horrifying evil is about to rise again!

Grace Rhodes is traveling to her hometown of Grand Island, Nebraska to take care of her sick mother who has become paranoid and never leaves her house. The ill state of her mother also puts Grace in the care for her younger siblings James and Margaret.

She gets her old job as an assistant at Dr. Larsen’s clinic back and she starts to notice that all the children in the town is getting a strange fever. The fever comes from the spirit of a dead preacher and it turns the children against the parents and the main target of the preacher is to use the body of young Margaret as a vehicle to resurrect himself back to life.

Children of the Corn: The Gathering is the first sequel in this series that creates an own world that seems separated from the first three films. There’s no talk about he who walks behind the rows in this film, but it does keep the same type of premise and tone as the previous films.

Children of the Corn III: Urban Harvest

childrenofthecorn3Genre: Horror
Year: 1995
Country: USA

Director: James D.R. Hickox
Starring: Daniel Cerny, Ron Melendez, Jim Metzler, Nancy Lee Grahn, Jon Clair

An adult nightmare is about to show its face in the heart of the city!

Two young kids from Gatlin are sent to their new foster parents William and Amanda Porter in Chicago where they will be able to build a new life away from the horrible tragedies that happened in their hometown where all the children murdered their parents.

Joshua is the oldest of the two kids and he seems to embrace the city life quickly and starts to make himself some new friends. Eli however, is wary of the other children and wants to keep things the same as it was in Gatlin. He brings “He Who Walks Behind The Rows” to the city and starts to build a new group of children who can believe in his God and eliminate all the adults.

So after two films in small towns out in the country, the filmmakers decided it was time to switch it up and try to see if the concept can work in an urban setting. Instead of slowly building a coherent story, the film is injected with nightmares and flashes to keep it “horror” instead of having enough faith to deliver one big payoff instead.

Children of the Corn II: The Final Sacrifice

childrenofthecorn2Genre: Horror
Year: 1992
Country: USA

aka: Children of the Corn, Children of the Corn: Deadly Harvest

Director: David Price
Starring: Terence Knox, Paul Scherrer, Ryan Bollman, Christie Clark, Rosalind Allen

These children are home alone, too. But their parents won’t be coming back.

Eight years ago the children of the small town Gatlin grouped together to slaughter off every adult in the city and create their own religious based society that revolves around worshipping their God who they called “He Who Walks Behind the Row”.

The remaining kids are now being adopted into new families in the nearby town Hemingford. It doesn’t take long before the kids once again turn to their religion and starts to take over the new town and it becomes up to the failing reporter John Garret and his son Danny to stop them.

It would take eight years before someone thought it would be a good idea to make a sequel to the Children of the Corn movie. Considering that this was called The Final Sacrifice, I’m doubtful that the filmmakers had any idea what they were unleashing by doing this. As of writing this, the series has managed to live on and the latest entry so far is┬áthe truly awful Children of the Corn: Genesis, the ninth in the series, which was released in 2011.
