The Toolbox Murders

toolboxmurdersGenre: Horror
Year: 2004
Country: USA

aka: Hotel Terror

Director: Tobe Hooper
Starring: Angela Bettis, Brent Roam, Marco Rodriguez, Rance Howard, Juliet Landau

Another legacy begins

Nell and her boyfriend Steven are the newest tenants at the old building called Lusman Arms. While they try their best to renovate the old apartment, Nell starts to hear strange voices around the building, and also starts to notice that some of the neighbors are becoming missing.

Nell starts to become obsessed with finding out what is going on in this building and the history of it does not make her less concerned. The place has a long line of missing tenants and the man who built the building was heavily into the occult. While trying to find answers, Nell herself becomes a target and might end up being the next one missing…

Toolbox Murders is a remake of a late 70’s slasher film that some might find a bit underrated. Why they decided to remake the film is beyond me since the original film doesn’t have that big of a following and there is hardly any need to use the name of that one to make a new film about a crazy killer in a building.

Scarecrow

scarecrowGenre: Horror
Year: 2013
Country: USA

Director: Sheldon Wilson
Starring: Lacey Chabert, Richard Harmon, Robin Dunne, Nicole Munoz, Julia Maxwell

He’ll scare you… to death

The high school teacher Aaron is taking a group of students that he has put on detention out to an abandoned farm to bring back a scarecrow display for their local holiday celebration. What they did not expect is an evil spirit in the form of a real Scarecrow lurking around on the farm, looking for fresh prey to feed upon.

So, here we have yet another Syfy original movie. Scarecrow has the same feel as the late 90’s post-Scream slasher films with young high school teens (played by 20+ year olds) going somewhere and then being attacked by an evil entity.

It starts out fine enough and quickly introduces the characters and then gets on to the monster and the murders. Our main hero is Lacey Chabert as Kristen, although she isn’t really playing anybody but is here to bring in a few extra viewers and be good looking while she is fighting off the scarecrow, something she does quite well… looking good that is.

The Mutilator

themutilatorGenre: Horror
Year: 1985
Country: USA

aka: Fall Break

Director: Buddy Cooper
Starring: Matt Mitler, Ruth Martinez, Bill Hitchcock, Connie Rogers, Frances Raines

By pick, by axe, by sword, bye bye!

One evening while his father was out working, young Ed Jr. started to clean one of his rifles to surprise him when his father got home. An accident happened though and the rifle went off, killing his mother and changing the life of both himself and his father forever.

Even though this scared him for life, Ed Jr. is trying to cope with his past in his adult life and about twenty years after this horrible accident, he and a group of his closest friends decide to have a weekend of fun and games in a beach house that belongs to Ed Jr.’s father. However, the past will creep up on Ed Jr. and this will be a weekend the youngsters will have a hard time surviving.

The Mutilator plays out like a prime example of an 80’s slasher that tries to give the fans of the subgenre exactly what they want, without thinking that it would be nice for them to experience something new aswell. It lacks any effort to deliver anything new to the table, trying only to rely on a few gory kills and a glimpse of nudity every now and then.

Man Bites Dog

manbitesdogGenre: Horror / Comedy
Year: 1992
Country: Belgium

original title: C’est Arrivè Près de Chez Vous
aka: It Happened in Your Neighborhood

Director: Remy Belvaux, Andre Bonzel, Benoit Poelvoorde
Starring: Benoit Poelvoorde, Malou Madou, Remy Belvaux, Andre Bonzel, Jean-Marc Chenut

A killer comedy

A group of amateur filmmakers has decided to create a documentary where they follow the daily life of a serial killer. They get in touch with Ben (short for Benoit), a charming poetic man in his thirties who enjoy the finer things in life, a good film, a great meal and also to murder off random people to create a decent income for himself.

During the production the crew and Ben becomes close and developes a great friendship. It even goes so far that the crew gets involved in the illegal activities of Ben and he in return becomes an investor of their documentary. The problem now is, how can they wrap this story up?

Man Bites Dog is a small Belgium movie that has gathered some recognition over the years, especially with the excellent Criterion DVD release. It is shot in black and white and takes advantage of the handheld camera style several years ahead of The Blair Witch Project.

All The Boys Love Mandy Lane

alltheboyslovemandylaneGenre: Horror
Year: 2006
Country: USA

Director: Jonathan Levine
Starring: Amber Heard, Anson Mount, Whitney Able, Michael Welch, Edwin Hodge

There’s something about Mandy all the boys love

Mandy Lane is without a doubt the most popular girl in high school. Not only is she drop dead beautiful, she is kind, shy, smart and she doesn’t let her popularity get to her. Even if she could have had any boy or girl in her school, she still has made the choice to stay a virgin.

She has been invited to join a few of her friends on a trip out to a ranch for a weekend of fun with booze and hooking up. It doesn’t take long before pretty much all of the boys try to figure out a way to get with Mandy, but after a while things start to happen that should bring the focus on staying alive instead of taking the innocence of Mandy Lane.

Maniac

maniacGenre: Horror

Country: USA / France

Director: Franck Khalfoun
Starring: Elijah Wood, Nora Arnezeder, Jan Broberg, Liane Balaban, Megan Duffy

I warned you not to go out tonight

Frank Zito is a loner, an outsider of society. He runs a mannequin business, but it is really just there for his own needs. He keeps no friends around and spends all of his time alone. That is, when he isn’t outside stalking and preying on young women that he so desperately wants to murder and mutilate.

The original remake, starring the great Joe Spinell is one of my all-time favorite horror films and might also be my favorite portrayal of a serial killer in any movie I’ve seen so far. So when the news of a remake hit the Internet, I can’t say I was very positive. The remake craze of the last 10-15 years has delivered just fancier and flashy new versions of films that were and still are great as they are. However, words did come out saying that this film did in fact have something original to offer and the way it was shot would also make it seem like this was a unique take on the original film, so in the end I decided it couldn’t hurt to give it a chance.

Goodnight, God Bless

goodnightgodblesGenre: Horror
Year: 1987
Country: England

aka: Lucifer

Director: John Eyres
Starring: Emma Sutton, Frank Rozelaar-Green, Jared Morgan, Jane Price, Alan Rowlands

Your nightmare has just begun!

A lunatic in a priest outfit goes by a elementary school and starts to kill off the young children. Little Mandy came close to being killed, but because the lunatic was out of more bullets she survived.

The killer wants to kill her off since she was the only witness and he starts to stalk her and her mother Lisa, but also has to get past detective Green who is handling the case and has also fallen in love with Lisa.

This sure is an unknown movie. Also known as Lucifer, Goodnight God Bless is a small slasher film from England that are still awaiting getting a release on DVD or Blu-Ray. It has an incredible opening that sets the tone for a shocking film, but it never is able to follow-up on it. The idea of a serial killer priest is quite good and could have been used better than what it was in this one.

Hatchet III

hatchet3Genre: Horror
Year: 2013
Country: USA

Director: BJ McDonnell
Starring: Danielle Harris, Kane Hodder, Zach Galligan, Caroline Williams, Parry Shen

Some legends never die

Marybeth Dunston is the last survivor after the massacre created by Victor Crowley. She was able to finally end the life of the bloodthirsty maniac and with her final strengths, she walks into the local police station holding the remaining piece of Crowley’s scalp before she passes out.

Sheriff Fowler believes that Marybeth is responsible for the murders that has happened out in the woods and locks her up before he heads out to investigate the events that took place the night before. Victor Crowley might be cut to pieces and presumably dead… but that doesn’t seem to be enough to stop his unrelentless spirit.

I was never a fan of the first two Hatchet movies. I’ve so far found this series to offer little new to the slasher subgenre in terms of originality, suspense or even fun. They might not be made to be taken very serious, but when the films isn’t even funny then there’s little to none entertainment quality to be found.

Sleepaway Camp

sleepawaycampGenre: Horror
Year: 1983
Country: USA

aka: Nightmare Vacation

Director: Robert Hiltzik
Starring: Felissa Rose, Jonathan Tiersten, Karen Fields, Christopher Collet, Mike Kellin

…you won’t be coming home!

It is summertime and John Baker has taken his two kids Angela and Peter out for a holiday nearby a lake. A tragic boat accident occurs which leaves Angela witness the death of her father and her brother.

A few years go by and Angela is now a teenager. She is sent on a summer camp together with her cousin Ricky. The other kids and even some of the counsellors keep bugging Angela to try to get a reaction out of her, but Ricky tries his best to keep them away from her. Things get even more brutal at this camp when a serial killer appears to be slashing away several of the workers.

Sleepaway Camp was made during the best years of the slasher films and while it does play on the usual strings, it has some others added to the mix that makes it stand out from the crowd. For once a summer camp film actually has kids portraying kids. These are children that will make you never consider creating one though, they are vicious, mean and hateful. Even the adults are creepy and mean-spirited in this one, it is not exactly a movie that will make you want to visit the US.

It will freeze your blood

The summer of 1945 saw the return of thousands of soldiers from World War II. She has broken up with the soldier in a letter during the war and he is out for revenge. When they go outside for a minute, he takes the chance to kill them off with a pitchfork.

After this sad event, the town hasn’t had another graduation dance in 35 years. The officials are not convinced that the idea of having the dance again is a good idea, but the kids are very enthusiastic. Not far after the announcement, teenagers end up brutally killed and there’s no doubt that a killer has emerged and is after the everyone who is attending the dance.
