All Cheerleaders Die

allcheerleadersdieGenre: Comedy / Horror

Director: Lucky McKee, Chris Sivertson
Starring: Caitlin Stasey, Sianoa Smit-McPhee, Brooke Butler, Amanda Grace Cooper, Reanin Johannink

Revenge is a bitch

Maddy used to be a nerdy and unpopular girl and she spent her time filming other high school students, making own documentaries and video blogs for herself. She particularly disliked the bratty popular crowd that consisted of football players and cheerleaders.

However, when senior year starts she has transformed herself into a hot little chick that wants to become a part of the same crowd that she previously despised. She has her own reason for doing this and it will prove to become a deadly one for them all.

All Cheerleaders Die is a remake of Lucky McKee and Chris Sivertsons first low budget movie effort from back in 2001. After that one, McKee has made a name for himself within the horror genre with brilliant efforts such as May and Sick Girl (from the Masters of Horror TV show). He has also done other notable films that I haven’t seen yet like The Woods and The Woman, before now teaming back up with Sivertson to bring a new version of their first effort back to life with this remake.

The killer in a coma returns

The young, but bright nurse Kathy Jacquard is starting her new job at the Roget Clinic, a private hospital that treats comatose patients. It is run by the arrogant Dr. Sebastian Roget and his creepy daughter and head nurse Matron Cassidy.

Kathy takes a liking to one of the patients, a young male named Patrick. She starts to believe that even though he is in a coma, he can hear what is happening around him and even feel pain. But it doesn’t take long before she realizes that while Patrick is bound to his bed, he is still dangerous to her and her closest ones.

Patrick is a remake of a 1978 movie with the same title. I’ve seen the original a long time ago, but hardly remember anything about it except that it seemed like a decent story to tell again on the big screen. This version is way more visually polished and feels less exploitative than the original. The traditional gothic atmosphere sets this a part from most newer horror films, even if they couldn’t resist themselves from adding a few unnecessary jump scares scenes. I’m guessing someone was afraid that it wouldn’t be “horror” enough without these additions. Commercially it probably was a smart move, but I would have prefered them to just tell the story and stay away from the cheap scares.

Night of the Living Dead

notld90Genre: Horror
Year: 1990
Country: USA

Director: Tom Savini
Starring: Tony Todd, Patricia Tallman, Tom Towles, McKee Anderson, William Butler

There IS a fate worse than death.

Barbara and her brother Johnny is visiting their mother’s grave. Johnny starts to make fun of his sister while they are there, but suddenly zombies starts to appear and attack them. Johnny gets killed during the struggle, while Barbara is able to flee away.

She arrives at a farmhouse where she first come across a zombie inside and quickly leaves, only to be consoled by a guy named Ben who arrived just as she was running out of the house and they decide that it’s still safer to go inside this house than stay outside of it. They find more people, living this time, in the basement and they use the house as a safety zone while more and more zombies are gathering outside of it.

This is a remake of one of the highest regarded horror movies of old time – the George Romero classic with the same title from 1968. Some say the birth of the remake came simply because the filmmakers never got the copyright for the original and this was a decent way to make some well deserved money off the title. This time the original director George Romero was happy to produce and write the script, while the makeup wizard Tom Savini got his chance to direct his first full length movie.

Judgement is coming

The American society has fallen on bad terms. Street drugs have become more and more dangerous and lethal and the gangs have become even more brutal than ever before and the same can be said about the new authority in the big cities – the judges.

One of these judges, Judge Dredd is known to be the most tough out there and he is now assigned to train a new recruit named Cassandra. Cassandra has a special gift of being a psychic and with powers like this she can become very valuable to the authorities, but the question is if she can survive her very first assignment with Dredd.

I’m not a huge comic book fan, so my first meeting with Judge Dredd was when I went to the local cinema to watch the 1995 film starring Sylvester Stallone. While that film was entertaining, it felt like there was still more to do with this concept so this remake/reboot/whatever they call it these days is something I welcomed for once.

Children of the Corn

childrenofthecorn2009Genre: Horror
Year: 2009
Country: USA

aka: Stephen King’s Children of the Corn

Director: Donald P. Borchers
Starring: David Anders, Kandyse McClure, Daniel Newman, Preston Bailey, Robert Gerdisch

The unhappy couple of the ex-soldier Burt and ex-prom queen Vicky are nagging on each other driving through Nebraska when suddenly a young boy appears in the middle of the road and they run him over.

The boy dies and the couple drives to the nearby town of Gatlin where they try to find some assistance. Gatlin is however not a normal town and there are no adults to be found. The children of the town has taken over and all the adults have been slaughtered and the couple is now finding themselves in danger of ending up with the same faith as the parents of these children.

The Children of the Corn saga had been dead and buried for nearly ten years when this made for TV (Syfy out of all networks actually) remake popped up. The idea was to make a film that was more based on the original story by Stephen King than what the 1984 movie was but although they might succeed on that point (I don’t believe I ever read King’s short story), everything else in this film is worse than the original film and even worse than all of the sequels aswell.

Nosferatu the Vampyre

Year: 1979
Country: Germany

original title: Nosferatu: Phantom der Nacht

Director: Werner Herzog
Starring: Klaus Kinski, Isabelle Adjani, Bruno Ganz, Roland Topor, Walter Ladengast

Jonathan Harker is a real estate agent traveling to visit the recluse Count Dracula at his castle in Transylvania. When he gets close to the castle, he gets warned by locals that the count is a bloodsucking vampire. He ignores the warnings and meets the strange character at his castle where he spends the upcoming nights.

The property that the count is after is in Wismar, Germany where Harker is from. The count also sees a portrait of Harker’s wife Lucy and gets mesmerized by her looks. He decides to buy the property and travel to Wismar, leaving Harker imprisoned at the castle. Harker has to escape and get home before Dracula gets to his young and lovely wife.

Nosferatu The Vampyre is a stylish remake/homage to the legendary 1922 movie. It is handled very respectful by director Werner Herzog and it oozes of style and atmosphere. It stays true to the original movie and the small things that are changed or added work very well. He also had to shoot the movie in both german and english at the same time. The general consensus seems to be that the german language one is better and that’s also the one I watched.
