Ms. 45

ms45Genre: Thriller / Drama
Year: 1981
Country: USA

aka: Angel of Vengeance

Director: Abel Ferrara
Starring: Zoe Lund, Bogey, Albert Sinkys, Darlene Stuto, Helen McGara

It’s no longer a man’s world…

Thana is a young mute seamstress that has the worst night possible when she is first raped by a masked attacker. To make things even worse she is attacked again when she enters her own home by another rapist.

Right after the second attack she looses it and gets revenge on the second rapist by bashing his head in with a blunt object. She takes the gun he carried with him and she starts to roam the dirty and sleazy streets of New York looking for other men that deserve to be punished for the way they treat other women.

Ms. 45 is a low budget rape/revenge film with a twist, and that twist is that the creator of this is none other than Abel Ferrara. The independent filmmaker got a minor hit with his previous film, the video nasty Driller Killer and the two make up for quite a good double feature of grim films shot on the streets of New York for next to nothing.

Director: Wes Craven

To avoid fainting, keep repeating “It’s only a movie, only a movie, only a movie…”

Mari Collingswood is celebrating her seventeenth birthday and is going to see a rock band called Bloodlust live in concert with her friend Phyllis. On their way to the concert, they try to score some marijuana and meet a local thug named Junior.

Junior says he has the best weed in the world and takes the two naive girls with him to an apartment where they are kept hostage by the rest of the gang that Junior is a part of. They keep them hostage and torture them for over a day before they take them with them out in the woods for some more humiliation but after the gang has had their fun, things start to turn on them.

The Last House on the Left is an infamous video nasty that also happens to be the directorial debut of the legendary horror filmmaker Wes Craven. The film was shot very cheaply with a small crew and the story, which was also written by Craven, was loosely based on the Ingmar Bergman film The Virgin Spring.

This woman has just cut, chopped, broken and burned five men beyond recognition… but no jury in America would ever convict her!

The 70’s where brutal! Movies such as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Last House on the Left came and changed the tone of horror cinema from being colorful and more classy in the 60’s to becoming more realistic, violent and grim. Hundreds or probably thousands of exploitation movies where victims where tortured, raped and/or slaughtered emerged. I Spit on Your Grave is one of the most famous brutal movie there is. Film critic Roger Ebert called it «a vile bag of garbage» and it has been banned in several countries including my very own Norway. So does it deserve its hype? Does it still hold up nearly 35 years after shocking the cinematic world?
