The Green Inferno

thegreeninfernoGenre: Horror
Year: 2013
Country: USA / Chile

Director: Eli Roth
Starring: Lorenza Izzo, Ariel Levy, Daryl Sabara, Kirby Bliss Blanton, Magda Apanowicz

No good deed goes unpunished

Justine is a college freshman, who becomes interested in the work of a local social activism group. Ignoring the warning of her friend, she joins the group on a trip to Peru where they plan to stop a company from destroying the forest.

When they plan to head home their plane crashes and they are stuck in the middle of the jungle. The group is quickly surrounded and taken captive by a group of savage meat loving cannibals. Unless they find a way to escape, they will all end up on the dinner plate, one by one…

So, Eli Roth is back with a new film. Well, not exactly new as The Green Inferno was supposed to be released back in 2013, but due to problems at the production company the release has been postponed until now, late 2015. Even though I have not been fond of any previous efforts of Roth, I am still hoping that he will knock it out of the park one day. He is a horror nerd, like us fans and nothing would make me happier than to be able to cheer for “one of our own”.

Cannibal Holocaust

cannibalholocaustGenre: Horror
Year: 1980
Country: Italy

Director: Ruggero Deodato
Starring: Robert Kerman, Carl Gabriel Yorke, Francesca Ciardi, Perry Pirkanen, Luca Barbareschi

The most controversial movie of all-time

An American film crew has gone missing while shooting a documentary on the cannibal tribes deep in the deep rainforest of South America. The team of four will do anything to get their footage, even if it means they have to stage it. This time they go too far though and they never return from the jungle…

An anthropologist from the New York University, Harold Monroe, agrees to go on a rescue mission to find the lost film crew, or whatever is left of them. What he find and is able to get with him home is the footage of the lost crew, footage that will leave everybody shocked and disgusted.

Cannibal Holocaust. Perhaps the most controversial movie of all time. The movie stirred up so much trouble that the director Ruggero Deodato had to meet up in court to prove that what was shown in this film wasn’t actually real murders! The mixture of real animal violence and the realistic special effects used for the violence against humans might have fooled people back when this was released, but (thankfully) no humans were seriously harmed during filming of this movie.

American Burger

americanburgerGenre: Comedy / Horror
Year: 2014
Country: Sweden

Directors: Johan Bromander, Bonita Drake
Starring: Benjamin Brook, Madeleine Borg, Lena Bengtson, Fredrik Hiller, Liam Macdonald

The ultimate vegetarian movie!

A bus filled with American students are on a trip in Europe to experience new countries and cultures. The students, a mixture of nerds, jocks and cheerleaders, are more interested in having fun than actually soaking in the new culture.

One stop on their trip is way out in the woods at a hamburger factory called American Burger. They will be let in on the secret behind their popular hamburger, and most of them will even become a part of the meat process and put the “American” in the American Burger.

American Burger is a comedy that doesn’t care about being very intelligent or subtle. It tries to bring a happy atmosphere that were found in a lot of horror comedy films from the 1980’s. It has a very simple story, a burger factory making burgers out of American students and it is set in the woods some place in an exotic country named Sweden.

Amazonia: The Catherine Miles Story

AmazoniaGenre: Drama / Action
Year: 1985
Country: Italy

original title: Schiave Bianche: Violenza in Amazzonia
aka: White Slave, Cannibal Holocaust 2: The Catherine Miles Story, Forest Slave

Director: Mario Gariazzo
Starring: Elvire Audray, Will Gonzales, Dick Campbell, Andrea Coppola, Dick Marshall

Only one thing kept her alive

18 year old Catherine Miles travels from London down to the Orinoco River in the Amazon to visit her parents who owns a plantation field there. While out on a boat trip, they get attacked by a local tribe. Catherine’s parents are brutally slaughtered while she is drugged by a poisonous dart.

She is taken away by the tribe, led by a strong warrior named Umukai, and taken to their village. There she is sold to the highest bidder and kept captive. While also trying to adjust to life in the jungle with the tribe, she also tries to find a way to revenge her parents and also get out of the jungle and back to civilization.

Amazonia was released as Cannibal Holocaust 2 in several countries in Europe and I’m sure there was plenty of disappointed viewers who rented it expecting something grizzly and brutal. This film is something very different. Yeah, it does take place in the jungle and does feature a native tribe, but it’s not about “civilized” people vs. natives or anything like that. Instead it’s more of a drama about… love. Yes, love!

John Bradley is a british photographer which is currently working in Thailand, snapping away photos and also watching some local kickboxing. He gets in trouble at a bar and kills a local in self-defence and escapes out to the jungle of Burma. Here he is captured by a native tribe and they keep him captive in their village.

The natives start to use him for labor work and after a while he has gained their trust and is able to be a part of their society. He finds love with one of the natives and tries to teach her basic english so they can communicate better. When everything starts to go well for John, a tribe a cannibals starts to attack their village.

Deep River Savages is known as the first of the italian cannibal wave that lasted almost exactly ten years. Even though it’s the first of this infamous subgenre, it is basically a continuation of another italian dominated subgenre – the mondo movies.

Cannibal! The Musical

POSTER - CANNIBAL! THE MUSICAL (2)Genre: Comedy / Musical
Year: 1993
Country: USA

aka: Alferd Packer: The Musical

Director: Trey Parker
Starring: Trey Parker, Matt Stone, Dian Bachar, Toddy Walters, Jason McHugh

All singing! All dancing! All flesh eating!

It’s 1883 and Alferd Packer has been found guilty of a heinous crime of cannibalism and murder. A female reporter wants to get his side of the story before he is hanged for his crimes, and Packer accepts her offer to hear him out and let’s her in on what really happened.

He tells the story of him and his fellow gold-prospecting friends that make their way to Colorado where they expect to strike gold. They way over to Colorado becomes very long however and they get lost after a few weeks with danger all around them.

Cannibal! The Music started out as a college project back in 1993 by the guys who would eventually go on to create the hugely popular South Park TV series. After they had made a three minute long trailer they secured 125,000 dollars to make it into a full feature film. The effort on this project made the school kick out Trey Parker since he become too focused on this project instead of how other school work.

Eli Roth loves Cannibal Holocaust

INFphoto_1140876_eli.jpg

And now he is going to shoot “The Green Inferno” in the Amazon River. The plot revolves around a group of survivors from a plane crash who has to survive in the amazons and comes across a tribe of cannibals. Roth has said in the past that Cannibal Holocaust is one of his favorite movies and the title “Green Inferno” is an obvious reference to that film, since that is also the title of the film-within-the-film in Holocaust.

Since directing the sequel to Hostel, Roth has kept himself busy by producing The Last Exorcism and popping up in cameo’s in other films. I haven’t been impressed with his films so far, but I am always up for a new cannibal movie so hopefully he is able to deliver something interesting with this one. My biggest concern is that it can quickly become a rehash of the older ones and simply another homage¬†instead of bringing something new to the table.

The cast he will be working with consist of Daryl Sabara (Spy Kids, Machete), Kirby Bliss Blanton (Hannah Montana, Scar), Lorenza Izzo (Fuck My Wedding, Aftershock) and Ariel Levy (Fuck My Wedding, Aftershock), Sky Ferreira (Putty Hill) and Magda Apanowicz (Snowmageddon, Dead Souls).

Filming is set to start in November.
