Insidious: Chapter 2

insidiouschapter2Genre: Horror
Year: 2013

aka: Insidious 2

Director: James Wan
Starring: Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, Ty Simpkins, Lin Shaye, Barbara Hershey

It will take what you love most.

The Lambert family has been through hell after having to fight against a ghost entity that had taken an interest in one of the sons of the family, wanting to possess his body so the entity can cross back over into life again.

During this fight, it becomes clear that the ghost and Josh, the father of the family, has had some history together and when ghostly events start to yet again happen with the family, the key to survival lies in the childhood of Josh Lambert.

I consider the first Insidious to be one of the best horror films from the last ten years and would also add James Wan’s other recent horror film The Conjuring to the same list. So needless to say I was anticipating the sequel to Insidious and made sure to see it on the big screen and I can happily say that I was not disappointed.

Paranormal Activity IV

Director: Henry Joost, Ariel Schulman
Starring: Kathryn Newton, Katie Featherston, Matt Shively, Alexondra Lee, Stephen Dunham

It’s closer than you think

It’s been five years since the murder of Kristie Rey and her husband. It’s assumed that Kristie’s sister Katie was responsible since her boyfriend was found murdered the night before. She and Kristie’s son Hunter has gone missing ever since.

A teenage girl named Alex and her family lives on the same street and finds a young abandoned boy named Robbie wandering around alone. The family let’s him stay with them since his mother is supposed to be ill and shortly after he has entered their house, paranormal stuff starts to occur.

Some might be tired of these films by now, but I still think they can be fun and even scary if done right. The point of view filming has a lot of potential and it is very effective on me. I do think that none of the films have used its full potential yet and didn’t care much for the second film, but did enjoy some of the tricks in the third even though the story went a way I didn’t care for.

Director: Henry Joost, Ariel Schulman
Starring: Lauren Bittner, Christopher Nicholas Smith, Chloe Csengery, Jessica Tyler Brown, Hallie Foote

It runs in the family!

This prequel is set 18 years ahead of Paranormal Activity 1 and 2. Kristi and Dan are receiving a bunch of old stuff from Katie that belonged to Kristi and Katie’s grandma. The boxes include a bunch of old VHS tapes. When the house looks like it’s been robbed, the tapes are missing. This part should be familiar to those who have seen the second movie in this trilogy.

We then skip back to the lovely days of 1988 where Kristi and Katie are children, living with their mother Julie and stepfather Dennis. Dennis works as a wedding videographer and enjoys filming the daily lives of his family. When something mysterious happens on camera one night, he gets obsessed and sets up different cameras around the house hoping to catch something in the act.

The idea of setting this in the late 80’s is interesting, but the clothes that the characters wear and the house this is set in is done very lazy. If they did not tell you that this was supposed to be in the 80’s, then you would have never guessed it by just watching the footage. I can’t remember that there where VHS cameras that gave you HD quality picture either.

Once you see him, nothing can save you

Ellison Oswalt is a true crime writer who is desperate for his next project to succeed after having several failed projects during the last ten years. He moves his family of four into a house that has a haunting history. Oswalt is hoping to use the murders that occurred in this house as the subject for his new book.

While looking around in the attic, he finds a box of old Super 8 reels. The films contain footage of different time periods from the 60’s and up to last year with different families being killed off. He is noticing some demonic symbol and figure watching these murders and soon finds his own family to be in danger by the same creature that is lurking in the shadows on these films.
