Country: USA

Director: Stiles White
Starring: Olivia Cooke, Ana Coto, Daren Kagasoff, Bianca A. Santos, Douglas Smith

Keep telling yourself it’s just a game

Debbie and Laine grew up together and are now in their college years. Debbie has found her old Ouija board game that the two used to play with when they were younger. One night Debbie plays with the board alone and ends up dead.

Her death is considered to be a suicide, something that Laine can’t accept. Laine gathers and convinces her best friends that the answer lies within the Ouija board and that they all together should play it to try to find out what happened to their friend, but you can never be sure who is answering when you are asking a Ouija board questions…

The popular horror company Blumhouse is back again with another supernatural horror film to keep the young crowds entertained. This time they have partnered up with Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes company to deliver a film based on the old board game Ouija, a game that actually is created to communicate with the spirits of the dead.

You see what it wants you to see

Mirrors don’t lie… or do they? Kaylie is convinced the antique mirror that her father bought for the family eleven years ago is to blame for the tragedy that would leave both her mother and father dead, with the blame being put on her little brother Tim who were only 10 years old at the time.

Tim is put away at a psychiatric hospital for the next eleven years and when he gets out Kaylie has a plan to prove his innocence and also prove that the evil that destroyed their family was supernatural. Her plan puts her and her brother in a night of war against the evil entity hidden within the antique mirror.

Oculus is another successful release by Blumhouse, a production company responsible for some of the biggest horror films in the later years – including Paranormal Activity, Insidious, Sinister and The Purge. This film however wasn’t produced by Blumhouse, but they rather got interested in it after it was completed and decided to bring their powerhouse behind it to give it a proper wide release, which worked and it did bring in over 40 million dollars on the box office with a budget of approximately 5 mill.

Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones

paranormalactivitymarkedonesGenre: Horror
Year: 2014
Country: USA

Director: Christopher Landon
Starring: Katie Featherston, Molly Ephraim, Andrew Jacobs, Jorge Diaz, Catherine Toribio

Jesse Arista is a young teenager living in a mexican neighborhood in California. He gets a digital video camera as a graduation gift and quickly becomes fascinated by it and documents practically everything he does in his life with it.

Together with his sister Marisol and his best friend Hector, he starts to investigate a strange death in an apartment on the ground floor that might be blamed on a bruja, a latin name for a witch. They come in contact with a spirit that will start to affect Jesse badly, and his friends and family is worried that he might be the next victim.

The Marked Ones is the fifth entry, sixth if you also count the unofficial japanese sequel, into the very popular Paranormal Activity franchise. It’s not called Paranormal Activity 5 since it is presented more as a latin based spinoff, even though after seeing it I can’t really see any reason why they couldn’t just slap the number five tag on it since it does play in the same world as the main story from the previous four films.

The Purge

thepurgeGenre: Horror / Thriller
Year: 2013
Country: USA

Director: James DeMonaco
Starring: Ethan Hawke, Lena Headey, Max Burkholder, Adelaide Kane, Edwin Hodge

Reminder all emergency services will be suspended for a 12-hour period during the purge

It’s the year 2022 and the United States has changed a bit. The New Founding Fathers of America has recreated parts of society and made it much better with low unemployment rates and crime rates. This is thanks to the annual Purge, a 12-hour period each year were all Americans are allowed to commit crimes and get all their violent thoughts out of their system without being prosecuted for it.

The Sandin family have done quite well for themselves, with the father of the family James having much success in selling home security systems. The Purge of this year though will bring the danger of the outside within the security system of the Sandin family when the son of the family opens up the doors to a stranger in desperate need of help.

Dark Skies

darkskiesGenre: Horror / Sci-Fi
Year: 2013
Country: USA

Director: Scott Stewart
Starring: Keri Russell, Josh Hamilton, Dakota Goyo, Kadan Rockett, J.K.Simmons

Once you’ve been chosen, you belong to them

The Barrett family is down on their luck. They might seem like they are living a perfect life with two children and a nice family house, but they are having financial problems and the father Daniel is not having any luck in finding a new job.

Their worries will increase when an alien entity is becoming more and more involved with their life, disturbing the sleep of their youngest son Sammy and also starting to get more and more control over all the family members. They not only have to find out what is causing these things, but also ask themselves if they are able to believe in it and only then can they try to fight it.

Dark Skies is a strange and unique take on alien abductions. It is basically played out like a haunted house movie, even though it is aliens and not ghosts who are responsible for doing the hauntings. It is an interesting mixture of horror and sci-fi, but it sadly doesn’t quite work all that well. They did try to make the alien entities scary and at least in my eyes it was not effective no matter how hard they tried.
