Wild Beasts

wildbeastsGenre: Horror
Year: 1984
Country: Italy

aka: Savage Beasts, The Wild Beasts Will Get You!

Director: Franco Prosperi
Starring: Lorraine De Selle, John Aldrich, Ugo Bologna, Louisa Lloyd, John Stacy

The most bloody nightmare ever imagined!

When the water system of a big european city is contaminated with the drug PCP, the animals run amok and attacks people. Because of a small earthquake the exotic animals of a local zoo gets free aswell which includes everything from tigers to elephants. We follow the animal expert Dr. Ruphert Berner and journalist Laura Schwarz throughout this mayhem.

I have a soft spot for killer animal movies, there’s something enjoyable watching animals take revenge on all the wrong things we humans do to this world and to them. So a movie that shows a range of different animals that attacks people should be right up my alley.

Director Prosperi had experience working with animals prior to this movie from making a couple of infamous mondo movies including Goodbye Uncle Tom, Mondo Cane and Africa Addio. He creates a dark atmosphere and does a good job with this movie. Some of the animal attacks are good and I’m surprised at how much they where able to make the animals do since I’m sure they didn’t have a lot of time to film this. Some scenes does get a bit ridiculous however. It’s fun to see an elephant stomp on cars, but not quite as suspenseful to see it choke a person with his trunk.

cujoGenre: Horror
Year: 1983
Country: USA

Director: Lewis Teague
Starring: Dee Wallace, Danny Pintauro, Daniel Hugh Kelly, Christopher Stone, Ed Lauter

Now there’s a new name for terror…

Today, a killer animal movie is usually done in a comedic style and in most cases seem to be done for the not-so-serious Syfy channel. Back in the early 80’s though, those type of stories were still treated seriously, including Cujo which was based on a Stephen King novel.

Cujo is not only about an animal, in this case a dog with rabies, that are out to destroy human beings. Cujo is just as much as family drama about a broken family that are struggling with infidelity.

Donna Trenton is the main character in this film, a woman who has a young son with her husband Vic and also an affair with her ex-boyfriend Steve. When Vic finds out about this, he leaves his family behind by going on a business trip to clear his head on how he should react to his wife’s adultery. While being left behind, Donna has to take their old car out for a repair, but the farmhouse where her mechanic lives has now been taken over by a big St. Bernard dog with rabies named “Cujo”.

sharktopusGenre: Sci-Fi / Horror
Year: 2010
Country: USA

Director: Declan O’Brien
Starring: Eric Roberts, Kerem Bursin, Sara Malakul Lane, Hector Jimenez, Liv Boughn

Half-Shark. Half-Octopus. All Terror.

I’m a huge fan of The X-Files. After watching every episode there is from that show I’ve come to the conclusion that the american government have a lot of evil plans that are hidden from the public. So I have no problem buying the concept of the american government making a «secret weapon» by mutating a shark and octopus into a SHARKTOPUS.

And of course the experiment goes wrong and the S-11 (project name for the sharktopus, makes you wonder what happened to S-1 – S-10?) is free to terrorize beaches everywhere. And where do you go if you want to eat human flesh? Mexico of course!

This is a Syfy movie produced by b-movie master Roger Corman, starring Eric Roberts and a bunch of hot chicks. A LOT of chicks actually and most get a minute or two of screen time before they become food for our beloved seapet. The body count is quite high in this movie and some of them are fun and inventive. Eric Roberts is also fun to watch and look out for a cameo of Corman aswell. The sharktopus looks great considering what you would expect from a movie like this. And I can’t brag and say that I have seen a real sharktopus so I’m gonna have faith in that this was as close as a real one would be.

The Food of the Gods

foodofthegodsGenre: Horror / Sci-Fi
Year: 1976
Country: USA

Director: Bert I. Gordon
Starring: Marjoe Gortner, Pamela Franklin, Ralph Meeker, Jon Cypher, Ida Lupino

One taste is all it takes!

Morgan, a successful football player, packs up his bags and heads out to the countryside with a few of his friends to experience unpolluted nature to get a break from the hectic city life. While they are out to do some hunting, a swarm of giant wasps kills his friend Davis.

Morgan and the rest of his friends are unable to let this event go, so shortly after they go back to this place to investigate and find out what has happened in these woods to make these wasps become so big. They find out that it isn’t only the wasps that have become outrageous big and that there is something very unnatural within these woods.

Food of the Gods is based on a novel by the legendary writer H.G. Wells. It has a great concept that deals with pollution and unnatural food. It is however not done very well in this film and rather just becomes a film about giant animals killing people, which is a shame since there was potential to do more with the story than what the filmmakers did here.

Vampire Bats

vampirebatsGenre: Horror
Year: 2005
Country: USA

Director: Eric Bross
Starring: Lucy Lawless, Dylan Neal, Liam Waite, Timothy Bottoms, Craig Ferguson

It’s feeding time

Believe it or not but Vampire Bats is actually a follow-up to Locust (2005), another made for TV horror movie were people are attacked by animals. Both of these movies have one thing in common and that’s Lucy Lawless, the actress famous for her portrayal of Xena: Warrior Princess. In this one, she plays Maddy Rierdon. Maddy is a former government scientist and now a biology teacher at a high school where a bunch of bratty kids go. You won’t remember the names of any of the kids when the movie is done anyways.

Vampire Bats follows the same concept that most of these movies does. Some chemical waste gets leaked out to the nature and nature mutates and fights back, in this one by bloodthirsty Vampire Bats. Our Xena… errr… Lucy has to fight against the corrupt officials to get the job done and get rid of these bats before they are able to leave all the locals dead.

Jersey Shore Shark Attack

jerseyshoreGenre: Horror / Comedy
Year: 2012
Country: USA

Director: John Sheppird
Starring: Jeremy Luc, Melissa Molinaro, Jack Scalia, Paul Sorvino, William Atherton

Your worst fears will surface.

Yo, check it bro! Sharks are attacking the shore yo! And they got those big teeth bro! Ain’t no fistpumpin’ in the club with sharks outside, knahmean? One of the guido’s is like missing and we know he been taken by them sharks yo. Police be all up in our faces sayin’ he just drowned and stuff, but we know better bro! So we round up our gang and hunt those sharks down yo! Bro! Yo!

Syfy’s shark movies have become pretty much self-parody movies already, so why not do something that parodies both their own movies and a popular TV phenomenon? Jersey Shore is a successful and very hated TV show without any real qualities except dumb entertainment. The idea of combining that with a shark movie is quite genius and smart.

arachnoquakeGenre: Horror / Comedy
Year: 2012
Country: USA

Director: Griff Furst
Starring: Tracey Gold, Edward Furlong, Bug Hall, Ethan Phillips, Olivia Hardt

The world will quake in fear

An earthquake in New Orleans unleashed hordes of white spiders who is not very friendly to humans. The spiders come in all kind of sizes and they have such power as running on water and breathing fire.

Another original Syfy production for us all to enjoy! This one doesn’t even try to be scary or horror at all. It almost plays like a spoof on any other movie Syfy has made in the last years.

Arachnoquake stars a very tired looking Edward Furlong (American History X, Terminator 2), the ageing but still lovely Tracey Gold (The Willies, Growing Pains) and some other actors that no one would recognize unless they know them in real life. Their characters aren’t really important and there isn’t any notable character development, so I don’t feel the need to write anything about them. It is directed by Griff Furst who also did such movies as Swamp Shark, Lake Placid 3 and Wolvesbayne. He is starting to build up quite an impressive filmography of cult movies.

Piranha 3DD

POSTER - PIRANHA 3DDGenre: Horror / Comedy
Year: 2012
Country: USA

aka: Piranha DD, Piranha Returns, Piranha Three-Double-D, Piranha XXL

Director: John Gulager
Starring: Danielle Panabaker, Matt Bush, Katrina Bowden, Jean-Luc Bilodeau, David Koechner

Double the action. Double the terror. Double the D’s.

Summer is arriving at Merkin County, a small town close to Lake Victoria where the piranha breakout happened a few years ago, and Maddy has returned home for the summer holiday. While she has been away her stepfather Chet has turned her mother’s water park into an adult water park where nudity is allowed and encouraged and life guards have been traded for stripper life guards.

Maddy and her friend Shelby get a little closer to the piranhas that are coming to Merkin County, and Maddy now tries to warm Chet and the others before the piranhas arrive at the water park and creates a blood orgy like no other.

It’s the old Hollywood cliché, create a successful movie and sequels must also be made. Piranha 3DD is almost as expensive as the first Piranha and since it’s a sequel it tries to outdo the first one in nudity, comedy and gore. And as usually is the case, it fails to outdo the original when it comes to talent and creativity. While the first one did great, this one seemed to flop in the box office.
