The Finley “Murder” Tapes
Thomas Finley has been convicted of murdering a psychic named Dr. Edgar Lauren. And even worse than that, he is also convicted of raping and murdering his big sister Samantha. Not long after the conviction, Thomas decides to give up on life and commits suicide in prison.
Some tapes are found at their house where Thomas has been filming strange happenings around in his house, especially something tormenting his sister. Their mother Ellen believes at first that all of these happenings can be blamed on the ghost of her late husband David, but after a while these attacks start to get very violent…
When Paranormal Activity became a huge success in cinemas all around the world, it was only a matter of a few weeks before a bunch of independent filmmakers decides to copy the formula and create their own found footage ghost movie. The concept of filming a haunted house movie with a handheld camera makes it look easy and it is a very cheap way to create a film.
One company that surely didn’t want to let the chance get away from them was Asylum, a company known for making plenty of cheap mockbusters out of big Hollywood movies. Not only did they do this film, but they are responsible for more than ten films that all follow this formula (so far, with probably more than ten new ones in the works for the next few years).
Paranormal Entity follows Paranormal Activity very closely, with the exception of adding some more blood and nudity to it. I actually saw this not long after Paranormal Activity came out and actually found this one to be quite enjoyable at the time. Revisiting it now a few years and way to many other found footage movies later however, I sadly realise that it is not a very good or even enjoyable film.
What fails the most in this film is setting up the scary moments. While Paranormal Activity had its creepy moments, this film mimics the scares from that film without the same talent and the effect of the scares is just not to be found here. The ending of the film felt lackluster and rushed, they surely could have come up with a better way to finish the film. The family relationship is also poorly done. The actors are not very good at all and they are hardly convincing as a real family, especially Tommy and his almost pervy way of looking at his sister. The way they included nudity in this film was also done very cheaply and poor, although the nudity was appreciated by all means.
There’s not much to be said about Paranormal Entity. If you love the Paranormal Activity movies and the haunted house found footage subgenre, then this isn’t the worst experience in the world, but it’s not a very good movie either. I will probably never revisit it for a third time and I am giving it a bit better score than what I have given it in writing form, simply because it wasn’t this bad when I had my first experience with it.
