Can they really live a normal life after porn?

Sex sells, nothing new about that statement. The fact that the adult entertainment is a multi billion dollar industry is also not a shocker to most people. There has been many stories about the participants within this industry, most well known stories having a lot of shock value to them. This documentary however tries to give a new light to the actors or sex movies and how their lives become after their fame and fortune of the films have ended.

The documentary is done by having interesting conversations with a few legends of the porn industry, exploring what made them become a part of the industry, how their feelings was when they were active and how their performances has effected their lives today. Since there are several actors interviewed, the documentary never gets under the skin of any of the actors but rather become a collection of different people who get to share a small bit of their life with the camera, some have positive things to say about it and some don’t.

The variety of the stories makes this an interesting watch. Some documentaries on this subject tend to either be very anti- or pro-porn, not being subtle with what the filmmakers themselves think of participants of the sex industry. This one let’s the characters tell their stories, good or bad and tries to stay neutral. It works fine enough since some of the people involved here are quite interesting and likeable, but there is also not enough moving elements or time to make you get really invested in them.

And that’s a problem with this documentary. It does seem like the main focus was to show the human sides of the actors, but there is also hints of more being behind some of the stories. A good example is the story of Crissy Morgan, a beautiful and charming girl who seems to have more to tell and would probably benefit from having a documentary fully focused on her and not the rest. Another charming woman of the documentary is Asia Carrera, but the most interesting aspect of her is told in the end credits instead of during the documentary.

On the other hand, the humanizing aspect is good and does work well. It’s nice to see the more human sides of the male actors since this is an industry where the women really does get the most attention. All of the ones involved here, Randy West, John Leslie and Richard Pacheco are all very different and all come off as nice guys in this. They all have different sides that are interesting and makes them more than just guys who are banging chicks on films.

After Porn Ends is about humanizing the ones who most people tend to not care about. The ones that are ok to use and abuse and are considered to be less worth than others. This documentary does succeed in showing that they are just as human as you and me, but I personally didn’t need a documentary to tell me that. It ends up being interesting because the people in it are interesting to me and it is done well enough to make it worth a watch. Just don’t expect anything groundbreaking.
